Dear China

In the heart of the Xi’an Province in China, this photography series stands as a witness to the intricate interplay of urban transformation, gentrification, and the pressing specter of overpopulation that define contemporary China.

Through the lens of these housing complexes, I aim to capture the paradoxes of progress, where towering structures symbolize the ambitions of a nation while simultaneously underscoring the challenges posed by rapid urbanization. The images peel back the layers of these concrete landscapes, revealing the complexities of lives shaped by shifting economic forces and societal aspirations.

The housing complexes, once homes to generations, now stand as testaments to the phenomenon of gentrification.

Central to this series is the portrayal of overpopulation – a challenge that is both immediate and emblematic of a larger global issue. The density of life within these towering structures, the sheer multitude of stories they house, becomes a visual embodiment of the tensions arising from resource scarcity and limited space.

Through this series, I invite viewers to engage in a dialogue about the delicate balance between progress and preservation, and the ethical questions that arise in a world marked by limited resources.
